The new Disney/Pixar movie Cars 2 is actually getting some negative reviews, with many critics thinking it doesn’t live up to its predecessor. It’d be a shame if that’s true, as Pixar is usually a badge of high quality. At least the official iPhone and iPad book-app looks top-notch as usual.
Cars 2 World Grand Prix Read and Race is an all-new story set in the Cars world, which sees Lightning McQueen and friends/foes racing through cities around the world. As ever with Disney’s book-apps, there’s a choice of voice narration or reading it yourself, as well as an auto-turning pages mode for younger kids.
Two aspects go beyond the book idea. First, your children get to customise their own World Grand Prix team as the app goes along, tweaking 3D tyres, spoilers and engines while changing the colour of their cars. Second, there’s a proper game at the end: tilting the iPhone or iPad to race against the characters from the story, with three difficulty levels to suit all ages.
At £4.99 / $6.99, it sounds like a good bet for Cars fans – although there’s also Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe on the App Store which follows the plot of the movie itself.
