The Gruffalo returns with a Vanishing Wood app for iOS

It’s not that long since we were sadly noting the lack of official Gruffalo apps. How times change: there are now several, including newie The Gruffalo and the Vanishing Wood.

Released this month for iPhone and iPad, it’s a fun game for 3-7 year-olds with an environmental theme: “Help save the deep dark wood”.

The game sees Gruffalo and Mouse – now firm friends, at least when it comes to saving their local flora – replanting trees that have gone missing from their woodland home.

There’s an educational aim here: the game ties in with a campaign by Yorkshire Tea to plant one million trees in the UK and Kenya over the next five years. Their involvement is what makes the app free, with the aim being to get children interested in the idea of planting trees in the real world.

The app has a companion website with more on that front: a tree-planting map, activities to encourage kids and parents out and about, and downloadable activity sheets.

The Gruffalo and the Vanishing Wood is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
