Bringing 42 to your PC transforms casual practice into sustained, focused play. A desktop setup lets you sit through longer sessions without fatigue, use a keyboard to confirm bids quickly, and watch the full board state on a bigger screen while your computer teammates and rivals make their moves.

How 42 Plays as a Trick-Taking Game

42 is a four-player partnership game where you and a computer partner bid against two AI opponents. The goal is to reach either 7 marks or 250 points before the other team does. Each hand begins with a bid phase: you propose how many points you can score, and if you win the bid, you select the trump suit or declare a special variant. Then players lay dominoes in sequence, trying to win tricks and score points. Your role shifts between bidding strategically and playing your hand to support your partner's bid.

Game Modes and Domino Variants

42 supports a broad range of rule sets centered on classic domino matching, letting you tailor each session to your preferred style:

  • Low and Forced Only Low variants, where the lowest pip count wins tricks
  • Splash and Plunge modes for players seeking unconventional point structures
  • Sevens and Forced Only Sevens, focusing on seven-pip dominoes
  • Doubles Trump, where doubles rank above all other plays
  • No Trump and standard High play for traditional domino gameplay

You adjust these settings in the preferences menu before starting, letting you practice specific scenarios or challenge yourself across different rulesets.

Partner AI and Opponent Difficulty

Your computer teammate and two opponents operate under three distinct play styles: Conservative only bids strong hands above 30, Normal mixes moderate bids in the 31–35 range, and Aggressive bids on most hands where a win seems possible. Players note that teammate behavior can feel unpredictable: some hands produce unexpected bids or plays that don't align with typical domino strategy. The AI's decision-making during play generally holds consistent once hands begin, though users report occasional moments where the strategy feels inconsistent with the bid placed.

Tracking Performance and Reviewing Results

Every game you play on 42 is stored locally on your device. This persistent record lets you review your win-loss history and compare your scoring across sessions. Over time, you'll spot patterns in which variants suit your style and which bidding approaches yield the most wins. Many players use this data to refine their hand-reading skills and prepare for real-world domino tables.

Setup and Core Mechanics

At the start of each hand, you'll tap to bid a mark value, then confirm your trump choice or variant. Once play begins, you lay dominoes by tapping them and confirming with the green check mark when you've exhausted your legal plays or met your bid. If you're the high bidder, an undo option appears letting you revise your last bid, trump, or contract. Yellow bids signal forced bids determined by game rules, keeping you aware of which decisions are yours alone.

FAQ

How do I know when a bid is forced?

A yellow bid indicates the game has forced you to make a specific bid based on the current hand and rules. You can still choose your trump or variant, but the mark value itself is set.

What if I need to see the dominoes played in a trick?

Tap any domino or the hidden trick icon within the trick dialog, and all played dominoes will display letting you track what's been laid.

Can I change my bid or trump after I've chosen?

If you are the high bidder, an undo icon appears at the top of the screen. Tap it to reverse your last bid, trump selection, or contract choice.

How does the computer partner decide when to bid?

Your teammate uses one of three strategies. Conservative avoids low bids and waits for strong hands. Normal mixes bids across mid-range values. Aggressive bids on most playable hands. You can switch between these in preferences to find a partner style that suits your gameplay.

Will my game history carry over if I reinstall the app?

Game results are stored locally on your device, so keeping the app installed preserves your statistics. Reinstalling may reset this data, so note your scores before removing and reinstalling 42.
