You're at your desk working through the morning when you need to check the forecast for the day ahead. Rather than glancing at static numbers on your phone, Yr on PC displays wind, temperature, precipitation, and severe weather alerts in a continuous 48-hour animated timeline, turning weather checking into part of your desktop workflow alongside email and calendar.
Yr delivers weather forecasts from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute across 10 million locations worldwide. On a desktop computer, Yr functions as a live desktop weather station, staying open in a browser window or sitting alongside your other applications in the background. The layered forecast views (animated sky, hourly table, and detailed graph) give you the depth to plan your day without switching between apps.
How the Animated Forecast Works
The core of Yr is its visual 48-hour timeline. Animated clouds, rain, snow, and fog move across the screen to show weather conditions as they progress, hour by hour. Below the animation you see temperature, wind details, and alerts for severe weather. When conditions shift unexpectedly. What The Forecast?!!: the animated view makes it clear what's coming letting you adjust your plans accordingly. This stacked view means you don't scroll between tabs to piece together what's coming; everything relevant to the next two days sits in one place.
Three Ways to Read Your Forecast
Yr on PC version offers three perspectives on the same data, letting you choose which fits your planning style:
- Sky view with animated conditions and real-time details displayed alongside the hourly visualization
- Table format presenting hourly forecasts for the first three days in structured rows
- Graph display showing temperature, wind speed, pressure, and precipitation trends over time
Precision and Coverage
Forecasts come from a service jointly run by NRK and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, with a stated mission to secure life and property through accurate data. A 90-minute precipitation forecast (available in Norway) updates frequently to catch rain timing as precisely as possible. Users familiar with Yr over years report it as a trusted reference point for weather planning, though accuracy varies by region: some locations receive more reliable data than others. The app includes support for mountain peak forecasting, useful if your location or travel plans involve high-altitude terrain.

You can customize widget appearance to match your desktop, creating a compact weather summary for your home screen or dashboard. This makes Yr for Windows download practical for anyone monitoring weather across multiple places: commute routes, travel destinations, or hiking spots.
Desktop Integration

FAQ
Does Yr work offline on my computer?
Yr requires an internet connection to fetch and display forecasts. The service pulls live data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, so you'll need consistent connectivity to see current conditions and updates.
Why is the forecast changing so frequently?
Weather models update often as new data arrives, and Yr refreshes its predictions to reflect the latest meteorological information. This can mean conditions shift hour to hour, especially in variable weather. Check the app at the same time each day if you need stability for planning.
How accurate is Yr outside Norway?
Yr draws from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute's data, which provides strong coverage in Scandinavia and across Europe. Accuracy in other regions depends on local data availability and the institute's forecast models for those areas. Users report the service performs well in many places, though some regions receive less reliable forecasts than others.
Can I save multiple locations in Yr for computer?
Yes. Yr lets you save your favorite places and switch between them easily. This is particularly useful on desktop, where you can monitor weather for your home, workplace, travel destinations, or multiple regions without entering coordinates each time.
What's included in the 90-minute precipitation forecast?
This feature provides the most detailed, frequently updated rain forecast available in Yr. It's currently available only in Norway and gives precise timing for when precipitation will arrive and pass through your location.
How do I log in and stay signed in on my PC?
You'll link your Yr account to stay logged in on your computer. Your saved locations and preferences sync to that login, so they persist across sessions. If you encounter login issues during initial setup, try clearing your browser cache or waiting a moment for the service to respond.
