Snow White gets the Nosy Crow book-app treatment

Fellow parents, we are lucky that Nosy Crow exists. The company makes some very fine print books, but its apps are just as finely crafted, with a strong emphasis on helping children develop their reading skills rather than distracting them with interactive gimmicks.

The latest proof comes with Snow White by Nosy Crow, the British publisher’s latest app for iPhone and iPad. Released this month, it’s the newest in a series of fairytale apps that has retold The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk for our touchscreen times.

Now it’s Snow White’s turn, in an app that establishes its own look and feel that’s very distinct from the Disney film that, for many parents, still instantly comes to mind when we think about this particular story.

As with previous Nosy Crow apps, the voice narration is provided by children – something the publisher does to hold the attention of kids – while the on-screen words are highlighted in red when they’re spoken, to help early readers follow.

Also as usual, the characters in each scene deliver their dialogue telling the story, but can then be tapped on to say more: something that encourages children to practise reading, rather than simply sending objects whizzing around the screen as in many book-apps.

That said, there is interactivity: tap-and-drag tasks such as picking flowers and tidying up the seven dwarves’ house. The app is beautifully illustrated, animated and soundtracked, too. We think your children will want to read and re-read it many times over.

Snow White by Nosy Crow costs £3.99 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
