If you’ve got a pre-school child and a tablet, you should probably have an entire folder reserved for Sago Sago apps by now. They’re reliably colourful, playful and accessible for young children.
The latest is Sago Mini Boats, released this week for iPhone and iPad. It focuses on Sago Sago’s dog character, Harvey, although some of his friends make appearances too.
“Pack your bags and set sail with Harvey the dog. Pick a destination, select a boat and sail the high seas. Choose a tugboat, a super-fast speed boat or even a pirate ship,” explains its App Store listing.
“Sail around the world to visit the Sago Mini friends. Make stops along the way to collect treasure, share an ice cream or meet some undersea creatures. When the voyage is over, a happy welcome is waiting for you.”
As with previous apps from the Canadian sister studio of Toca Boca, it’s all simple to control: its 2-5 year-old audience will figure out to do with minimal parental help.
Also like those previous apps, it’s pleasantly open-ended: children aren’t forced to use it in any particular order or accomplish specific goals. They can simply play, explore and – if our sons’ usage of these apps when they were that age is any guide – sometimes make up their own stories about Harvey as he sails.
Sago Mini Boats costs £2.29 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store. It’s not available for Android yet, but Sago Sago did recently release its first four apps for Google-powered devices, so we’d recommend checking them out.
