The Croods is the new movie from DreamWorks Animation, focusing on a family of cavemen. Now it’s a mobile game too, developed by Rovio – the company behind Angry Birds.
The game challenges you to “help The Croods survive the wild… and each other” in a freemium game. Your children will be trapping and taming wild creatures, creating inventions and decorating their prehistoric home.
Freemium? Oh. Yes, this is another free-to-play game with an in-app store selling virtual items: coins and crystals in this case. Both are sold for between £2.99 and £39.99 a time.
£39.99? It’s not as shocking as the £69.99 in-app purchase options we’ve seen in games like Playmobil Pirates, Dino Land and Temple Run: Oz, but it still seems rather high for a game guaranteed to appeal to children.
We’re a bit disappointed in Rovio, which has usually been very responsible in its approach to young fans of Angry Birds.
We’re less surprised at DreamWorks, given its involvement in Shrek’s Fairytale Kingdom, a game which unashamedly suggested buying virtual items directly after its tutorial (and thus within the default 15-minute window within which people can make in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad without having to re-enter an iTunes password).
Still, if your kids are fans of The Croods and you’ve got your in-app purchase settings properly locked down – here’s our guide to doing that – this game may be worth a try.
The Croods is a free download from the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and also a free download from Google Play for Android devices. Here’s a video teaser:
