Disney’s new Toy Story 3 iPad app helps kids learn Chinese

Disney has already turned Toy Story 3 into a pair of engaging apps for kids, but now there’s a third that’s as much about education as entertainment. It’s called Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3 – Disney Language Learning.

Yes, the name does rather hint at the content. Aimed at seven year-olds and upwards, it uses characters like Buzz and Woody from the popular film franchise to teach Chinese, or at least teach 100 Chinese words, which is a good start.

There are five levels of reading, from English-only to get to know the story, through 25% Chinese/Pinyin language, 50%, 75% and then finally 100%. Disney says it’s the first in a series that will use its most popular characters for language learning purposes.

You can record yourself saying words and compare them to the pronunciation of the narrator, too. Apparently it’s based on a language-learning system called Diglot Weave, and it’s the first time this has been used in an app.

If you’re thinking of teaching your child Chinese with a view to their future job prospects - or if you or your partner is Chinese and you want your child to be bilingual - Disney’s app will be an essential download. It costs £2.99 and is iPad-only.
