Stories About Me makes social stories for kids with autism

There are an increasing number of ‘social stories’ apps aimed at children with autism and other special needs, but most simply present these stories to be read. New iPad app Stories About Me is different, though.

The app is designed for parents and teachers (together with children, obviously) to create their own social stories using text, photos and voice recordings.

It also works with the Dropbox cloud service to store the results, and share them with other users.

“Want to allow your child to relive the trip to their grandparents house? How about the fishing trip with dad? Maybe just reinforcing the routine of brushing your teeth before its time to go to bed,” suggests its App Store listing.

“With Stories About Me a student can be provided specific details on what they can expect from a situation and what should be expected of them. This app will allow them to hear their own or their teacher’s recorded voice and see recognizable images on the story pages, rather than predeveloped scenes involving strangers.”

The app itself is a free download, which includes the ability to create one story. An in-app purchase of £2.99 unlocks the Dropbox feature and allows unlimited story creation.
