German children’s author and illustrator Ali Mitgutsch made his name with a series of colourful books with scenes from the real world. Now they’re being turned into apps by publisher Ravensburger.

Look and Find Book – Our Big City went live on the App Store this week. It presents digital versions of Mitgutsch’s city scenes, with added sound effects to give a flavour of urban life.

Aimed at two year-olds and upwards, the app also includes a photo game: “You are given a detail of the picture which you have to search in the picture book and make a photo shot with your camera,” explains its App Store listing. Rewards include virtual stars, and even additional pages to unlock.

The app is available with German, English, French, Italian and Spanish languages, including the ability to switch between them, which may be good for older children learning a foreign language.
