Obligatory disclaimer: We’re Brits, so haven’t heard of Ricky Raccoon or Ranger Rick Jr. magazine before, although a spot of Googling tells us that the mag is published by the National Wildlife Federation, and has been going for 50 years.
That’s impressive, but so is Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions, which is Ricky’s first appearance on iPad, from the same publisher. It sees him setting off for Africa on a safari to find out about lions.
The result is a mixture of storytelling, wildlife videos and photography, animation and mini-games and activities, including matching animals with their sounds, playing with digital jigsaws and stickers, and playing an animal piano.
The National Wildlife Federation worked with a company called Moonbot Studios on the app, which is one reason we’re excited about it: Moonbot has made a couple of our favourite children’s apps on iOS: Numberlys and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
Our children love wild animals, the more exotic the better, so Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is likely to be a roaring success in our household. It costs £2.99 on the App Store and is iPad-only.
Here’s a video showing how it all works:
