The Snowman and the Snowdog gets a beautiful iPhone, iPad and Android game

This Christmas, Channel 4 is screening the long-awaited sequel to The Snowman, the memorable animated film of Raymond Briggs’ book.

It’s called The Snowman and the Snowdog, and to get you in the mood, the broadcaster has launched a free game for iPhone, iPad and Android based on the new film. We’ve been playing with it today, and it’s marvellous.

Without giving the plot away, we can say it involves a snowy flying trip to the North Pole, taking the sights of London in en route.

The game sees the Snowman and Snowdog flying through the air under their own steam – you don’t control them directly. Instead, you have to tap on objects in the world around them: snowflakes, other snowmen, puzzle pieces, presents and other items.

This means a.) younger children can master it quickly, which wouldn’t be the case if they were having to actually control the swooping snow-duo, and b.) it’s also good for several people playing at once on a tablet.

We were playing it with both our sons at once just now, and bar the odd whinge about whose turn it was to tap the next puzzle piece, it was great fun.

The game looks beautiful too, starting you above lush winter-countryside scenery, before zipping past lots of recognisable London landmarks – all with impressive graphics that wouldn’t look out of place on a console.

It’s a lovely piece of work, anyway, and will get you and your children justifiably excited about the film itself. The Snowman and the Snowdog is a free download for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and also for Android devices on the Google Play store.
