Sofia the First? If she’s not familiar to you as a Disney heroine, don’t worry. Sofia is the star of a new animated series on the Disney Junior TV channel.

She might be new, but she’s already got an app. Sofia the First: Story Theater uses the voices of the TV show’s actors to deliver a story starring Sofia – a girl “who suddenly became a Princess when her mother married the King”.

The app sees her learning the ins and outs of princessdom (is that a word?) while also talking to animals and fairies. Apparently some of Disney’s famous princesses – Ariel, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle and Jasmine – make cameo appearances in the app to show their support. Which is nice.

The interesting bit with this app is the ‘Story Theater’ part though. It gets children creating their own stories with Sofia and friends in a virtual cardboard theatre, dragging characters, scenery and props into place, then recording their own stories about what they’re doing.

It sounds like good, creative fun. Sofia the First: Story Theater costs £2.49 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
