Angry Birds games were being played by 263 million people in December 2012, according to publisher Rovio. We know a lot of those fans are children, so here’s some news on those furious feathery critters’ next moves.
First: books. Rovio has signed a deal with publisher Puffin – part of Penguin – to release a series of Angry Birds books over the next three years. The first four will arrive in July: The Official Sticker Book, Pig & Mix Puzzle Book, Fowl Play Sticker Activity and The Mystery of the Green Bird story book.
As you can tell, it’s a mixture of content. “We will be publishing across our most popular formats including the official guide, official sticker book and a whole range of story and activity titles,” says Penguin’s Richard Haines.
Also coming up: the long-awaited Angry Birds TV show. Well, it’s not really a TV show, because you’re unlikely to see it on a TV channel anytime soon.
Instead, Rovio says that its 52-episode animated videos based on Angry Birds will more likely be distributed within its own apps, although it hasn’t ruled out YouTube too.
“We have become the channel… Previously, content creators were reliant on others who had the channel,” Rovio’s Andrew Stalbow tells the Wall Street Journal.
I saw a couple of clips from the series when they were shown off at a TV industry conference last year, and they looked very good – certainly good enough to dispel any scepticism about the Angry Birds characters being able to carry a proper storyline. Stay tuned: we’ll let you know when there’s more to watch – whatever device it’s on.
In the meantime, here’s a taster:
