Comics In The Classroom iPad app illustrates history for kids

We love the idea of iPad app Comics In The Classroom: it turns famous historical events into digital comics where your children get to fill in the speech bubbles.

“Hear how the famous events of history unfold with our literacy-boosting read-along feature,” explains its App Store listing. “Written by the author of several of Britain’s most popular Secondary School History text books, it will equip you with all you need for the comic challenges ahead.”

Example comics include The Archduke and the Black Hand Gang (about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand just before the First World War); The Dambusters, The Murder of Thomas Becket and more to come on Rasputin, Pearl Harbour and The Gunpowder Plot.

The app is free, and the App Store listing mentions “three free demos” – the first three mentioned above – which implies future comics will be charged for in-app.

It sounds clever though: “Double tap on the first panel to zoom in. Then tap the empty bubbles, review your options and make your choice. Swipe to the next panel and once all four action-packed pages have been completed and the story has reached its climax, discover how historically accurate you’ve been.”

As we said, it’s a fab idea. Comics In The Classroom is a free download for iPad only.
