Another week, another Dr Seuss book being turned into an app. And the fact that The Butter Battle Book isn’t one of his most famous works actually makes it more appealing to us.

The storyline focuses on feuding Yooks and Zooks, whose battle is based in part on ferocious disagreement on whether to eat bread with the butter side up or down.

The app, like the book, traces their descent into ever-sillier weaponry (Triple-Sling Jigger, anyone?) as they try to outdo one another.

(If this is reminding you of the Cold War and nuclear arms race several decades ago, that’s reportedly what Seuss himself was thinking when he wrote it: an example of topical satire as a children’s story.)

As with previous Seuss apps from publisher Oceanhouse Media, you get voice narration, sound effects and word-highlighting as the story is read out, to help young children who are learning to read.

The iPhone and iPad versions add the capability for you and/or your children to record your own voices reading the story, and share it with other people who own the same app.

The Butter Battle Book costs £2.49 on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and £2.61 from Google Play for Android devices.
