The first Angry Birds Star Wars game was a huge hit with adults and children alike, to the tune of 100m downloads so far. Now a sequel has been confirmed by its publisher Rovio.

Angry Birds Star Wars II will be released on 19 September. They haven’t said which devices, but we reckon iPhone, iPad and Android are certainties, and possibly Windows Phone too.

“The new game will tackle the prequels, introducing a wide roster of never-before-seen Angry Birds Star Wars characters. The best part? You’ll get to play with over 30 of them,” explains Rovio in a blog post.

There’s a twist this time round, too. The game will come with a set of more than 30 ‘Telepods’ action figures made by Hasbro. Whenever you buy one, you can scan it into the game to use.

If that sounds familiar, yes: it’s basically Angry Birds Star Wars learning from Skylanders, which is similarly popular among children. Come September, your kids may well be pestering you for Angry Birds Telepods as well as Skylanders toys. Ah well.

Other details: Angry Birds Star Wars II will include at least one pig character to play as (“Join the Pork Side” as Rovio puts it), and there’ll be new plush toys, books, clothing and accessories to accompany it.
