Do you remember the Choose Your Own Adventure children’s books? They’ve shifted more than 260m copies since first coming out in the 1970s, introducing several generations of kids to the fun of nonlinear fiction.
Now they’re coming back. Well, hopefully. You can already get a range of the Choose Your Own Adventure books in digital form from Apple and Amazon’s e-books stores, but their publisher Chooseco is working on something more ambitious for iPad.
It’s called Choose ‘Toons: a new app aimed at 5-7 year-old children with a mixture of animation, storytelling and interactivity. Chooseco is trying to raise $130,000 on crowdfunding website Kickstarter to make it.
“Our first episode is based on the title Your Very Own Robot, where YOU put together a robot named Gus out of discarded parts from your parents’ robot lab. Gus gets you into a lot of trouble. This first episode has 20 story branches with 11 possible endings, with more than 30 minutes total of animation,” explains the company’s Kickstarter pitch. “We want to disrupt the world of cartoons the same way we disrupted your childhood.”
It sounds very interesting, especially as it’s more than just republishing the original Choose Your Own Adventure books in digital form. As with other Kickstarter projects, people choosing to pledge money can get a variety of rewards depending on how much they spend.
You’ll get a free copy of the app if you pledge $6 or more, become a beta tester if you pledge more than $30, a time capsule full of “awesome 1980’s goodies” for $75 or more, and even the chance to star as the story’s villain Boris for $1,000 or more – among other rewards.
We’ll keep you posted on the Kickstarter campaign, and the app itself if/when it reaches its target.
