Millions of children love the building game Minecraft. There are lots of Minecraft-related videos on YouTube. And the problem in linking those two trends is this: quite a few of those videos are a bit… sweary.
KicVidz is a new Android app that aims to solve that problem. “KIC stands for ‘Keep it clean’ and all videos featured inside this app have been verified as kid appropriate,” explains its Google Play store listing.
“What this means is that the videos do not feature any of the more common and popular curse words such as the ‘s’ word, the ‘f’ word, and the word used for ‘behind’.”
The app was developed by a parent called Shane Keller, with his seven year-old son in mind, who he wanted to be able to watch Minecraft videos on YouTube without encountering the potty-mouthed ones.
Keller is hand-curating the selection: he spends an hour a day looking for new Minecraft videos on YouTube, then adding the child-friendly ones to the app. More than 250 are currently featured.
The app divides videos into different categories: parkour, survival games, music videos and animations, for example, with the ability to save videos as ‘Favourites’ for repeat viewing. We think it could be a hit with parents of young Minecraft fans.
KicVidz costs £0.64 for Android on the Google Play store.
