There are dozens of Disney storybook-apps available for iPhone and iPad, but until now, none for Android smartphones and tablets.

Disney changed that on Friday with the release of eight apps on the Google Play Store. They feature some of the company’s most familiar characters, including Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and the stars of Cars and Toy Story.

All are being offered for a discount price at launch, too: just £0.64 / $0.99 each, meaning you could pick up all eight if you wanted for a mere £5.12 / $7.92. Here are the details, with links to the store:

Toy Story: Story Theater – We loved this on iOS: an app where the aim isn’t just to read stories about Buzz, Woody and co, but to create them. Kids choose scenes, characters and props, then record their voice telling the story.

Disney Princess: Story Theater – Another puppet theatre-style app, this gets children creating their own stories with three Disney Princess characters: Cinderella, Ariel and Belle. Again, it’s about choosing a setting, place characters and props, then recording your voice telling the story.

Cars 2 Read and Race – Part story and part racing game for kids starring Lightning McQueen and his friends (and rivals). Kids read the story, then get to race in Tokyo, Porto Corsa, London and Radiator Springs itself.

Wreck-It Ralph Storybook – A similar mix of storytelling and racing, this tells the story of Wreck-It Ralph, then gets kids to design their own “candy kart” and race in the Sugar Rush Grand Prix.

Mickey’s Paint and Play! – This is an inventive “3D colouring book” where you paint Mickey and Minnie Mouse using colours, patterns and stickers, then use the app’s magic wand to turn them into 3D moving characters, with a ‘Mousekemusic Player’ thrown in to create tunes as well.

Mickey’s Spooky Night – More Mickey here, in a creepy Halloween tale about a party with Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy. The story promises “ghostly surprises”, along with digital jigsaw puzzles.

Winnie The Pooh Puzzle Book – “Pooh’s tummy is rumbly, but his yummy honey is hiding,” explains the Google Play listing for this storybook-app, which complements the tale with digital jigsaws and a Pooh’s Cupboard matching game.

Mickey’s Wildlife Count Along – Finally, one more Mickey Mouse app: a story with educational aspects focusing on maths and science, with kids helping Mickey to count animals, take their photos and match them to their real-world habitats.

We’re guessing Disney won’t stop at eight, so keep an eye on the Disney Publishing Worldwide publisher page on Google Play to see when more Android storybook-apps turn up.
