Tesco to sell family-focused Hudl Android tablet for £119

We’ve noticed more children’s apps coming out for Android devices this year, particularly as more tablets come out swinging at Apple’s iPad. The latest comes from a surprising source: British supermarket Tesco.

It’s called Hudl, and is a seven-inch tablet that’ll cost £119, and whose key rival will be Amazon’s Kindle Fire. What’s more, Tesco is aiming its new device squarely at families.

How so? Tesco says that when you turn Hudl on for the first time, it’ll ask whether kids will be using your tablet, and if so it’ll give you advice on how to ensure the device is safe for them to use.

That includes recommending that you set content filters for the Google Play store and YouTube; creating separate profiles for you and your kids; setting a password for buying in-app purchases; and checking out some of the parental control apps available on Android.

This is exactly the kind of thing we’ve been hoping Apple would do on its iPads: Tesco’s tablet may be much cheaper, but the company appears to have done a good job thinking about what parents need to know when setting up the device.

Hudl goes on sale on 30 September in stores and on Tesco’s website, and it’ll be available in four colours: black, blur, purple and red. The company is promising a nine-hour battery life, and 16GB of memory (which can be expanded using a memory card).

Also good for parents: the inclusion of Tesco’s own film, TV and music services, as well as banking and shopping apps if you use the company’s services in those areas.

We haven’t actually used the Hudl yet, so we can’t vouch for its performance. Tesco says it has a nippy 1.5GHz processor inside and that it runs the latest Android Jelly Bean software, which bodes well. Just as important, though, is Hudl’s focus on being friendly and accessible for non-techy parents.
