Christmas 2013 looks set to be a big one for Android tablets. We wrote about the Tesco Hudl a few weeks ago, but now it’s got competition from another British retailer, in the shape of the Argos MyTablet.
Announced yesterday, the device is even cheaper – £99 compared to the Hudl’s £129 – and it’s aimed squarely at children aged 8-13, whose parents want them to own a tablet, but can’t quite stretch to iPad-level prices.
“Kids find it hard to share, so we’ve priced our tablet at a level that means everyone in the family can have one,” Argos’ Simon Barry tells BBC News. “We know a lot of families are probably feeling worse off this Christmas than last.”
It’s not quite as powerful as the Hudl, but the MyTablet should be good for most children’s needs, running the Android Jelly Bean operating system, with a 1.6GHz processor, 8GB of memory and a 1024×600-resolution screen. Apps including Angry Birds and BBC iPlayer will be preloaded on it.
MyTablet goes on sale tomorrow from Argos here in the UK. We’re hoping to get hold of one, plus a Hudl, to see how they compare. Meanwhile, if you’re wondering what apps to fill these devices with, check out our latest Best Android Apps for Kids post.
