Doctor Who has been sending kids behind the sofa for generations, and its latest incarnation is no different: we know there were a lot of children watching the recent 50th anniversary episode with their parents.
Both may be interested in a brand new mobile game that’s out today for iPhone, iPad and Android. It’s called Doctor Who: Legacy, and is an official game based on the characters, monsters and alien worlds of the TV show.
The game is part puzzler and part roleplaying game, where you build a team (one doctor plus up to five companions) and send them off to battle an array of monsters, including Daleks, Weeping Angels and The Silence.
The puzzle element involves swapping colourful orbs at the bottom of the screen, building up attacks to see off the monsters at the top. It’s similar to an existing game that adults may know called Puzzle & Dragons, in that respect.
Doctor Who: Legacy is based on the sixth and seventh series of the new TV show – the Matt Smith era – although some classic characters like K-9 and Sarah Jane will be appearing too (many kids will be familiar with both through spin-off children’s TV shows in recent years).
One thing for parents to know about: the game uses in-app purchases (IAP) of “time crystals” which can boost progress and unlock certain features. They’re sold for between £0.69 and £34.99, so make sure you’ve had a chat with your child about IAP before letting them loose on the game.
Doctor Who: Legacy is a free download for iPhone and iPad, and a free download for Android.
