Our sons are obsessed by Adventure Time at the moment, having stumbled across it on Cartoon Network one day. They will be hopping with glee at the prospect of Formula Cartoon All-Stars, then.
Released today by the children’s network, it sees Finn, Jake and Princess Bubblegum joined by a host of other Cartoon Network characters for a Mario Kart-style racing game.
“Race with Ben 10, Mordecai, Finn, Gumball, Rigby, Jake, Gwen, Skips, Darwin, Kevin, Marceline, Muscleman and more than 16 characters from Cartoon Network’s most popular shows,” explains its App Store listing. “Use the craziest power-ups to boost your vehicle or block your opponents with attacks of tomatoes, ice cubes, bubbles, bubble gum and even more.”
There’s a lot to it as well: children can create their own vehicle from more than 100 pieces, while racing on 75 tracks based on locations in the various Cartoon Network shows.
It looks a lot of fun, and there’s the promise of more characters to come. Formula Cartoon All-Stars costs £1.49 for iPhone and iPad, and £1.27 for Android. Note, the game isn’t in the US: it’s available elsewhere in the world though.
It also uses in-app purchases for virtual coins, which can be used to “speed up your progress and unlock levels”, although Cartoon Network stresses that they’re optional. We’ve had a quick look at the in-game store, and it offers them in quantities of 5,000 for £0.69, 12,000 for £1.49 and 25,000 for £1.99, so not super-aggressive.
