KidSquare iPad app’s education games for 2-8 year-olds

Here’s an interesting idea: KidSquare is an iPad app full of educational mini-games for children that uses subscription pricing: as parents, you pay a flat fee every month.

“In KidSquare, children will find a fascinating world where they can playfully learn to paint and cook, study math, alphabet, guess riddles, do puzzles and a lot more,” explains its App Store listing, which pitches the app as suitable for 2-8 year-olds. “KidSquare allows children to learn, play and solve various tasks, and parents can participate in the development and education of their child.”

The latter element involves the ability to check stats of how much your children have been using the app, what games they’ve been playing, and what achievements they’ve unlocked through their progress. You can also set time limits on their usage, if you’re so minded, while contacting other parents and KidSquare’s team from within the app to discuss the games.

It’s intriguing, as are the subscription options. Pay £2.49 for a month and you get two games and three “games updates”, but if you pay £4.99 for three months you get six games and nine updates; £7.49 for six months gets 12 games and 18 updates, and £11.49 for a year gets 24 games and 36 updates.

In other words, expect two new games and three updates every month for as long as you subscribe. We’ll be watching with interest to see how this catches on: it reminds us of the Playful Minds: Math app from 2012, which tried a similar thing, but hasn’t been updated in a long time.

KidSquare is a free download for iPad from Apple’s App Store.
