I grew up on Roald Dahl books, from the BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox through to The Witches. It’s been fab seeing my six year-old son start to read and enjoy them too.
And listen to them, perhaps? That’s what he’ll be able to do from this week. Dahl’s stories have been available as e-books for a while, but now publisher Penguin Books has launched a dedicated iPhone app: Roald Dahl Audiobooks.
It’s a collection of 19 audiobooks, all accessed from within the single app. The first chapter of each is free to download, but then you pay via in-app purchase to get the whole thing: most cost £4.99, although a few are cheaper.
The narrators include some big names too: Kate Winslet, Stephen Fry and David Walliams, although really keen Dahl fans will appreciate the inclusion of Douglas Hodge – currently playing Willy Wonka on-stage in London – too.
Stories can be downloaded and stored on your iPhone or iPod touch, meaning you can listen even when offline (on a plane or dodgy-reception train journey, for example). There’s also a ‘sleeper’ mode that continues playing until a preset time – i.e. bedtime.
That may raise the prospect of leaving the app running in your child’s bedroom while you go off and do something else, which is a bit sad. Actually, I think the appeal of this app may well be as something to listen to together. To be honest, I enjoy reading the books and putting on all the voices…
Roald Dahl Audiobooks is a free download for iPhone from Apple’s App Store, although you can find the e-books and other Dahl-related stuff on iTunes by clicking here.
