There are 17 fire engines at our house, but don’t worry: it’s not on fire. They’re toys collected over the last year or so by our four year-old, who has a penchant for all things red, loud and hosey.
New app Gocco fire Truck is at least a way to play fireman without buying another physical vehicle. It’s the work of developer Smart Education, whose Gocco Doodle app we enjoyed a lot earlier this year.
Here, you’re driving a fire engine around a 3D town, collecting water as you go while avoiding other vehicles, then putting out fires as you find them. There are even two hoses – a neat touch that means two children can collaborate to quench the flames.
It’s one of those apps that can appeal to a wide range of ages. Smart Education reckons it’ll suit 3-9 year-olds, while we think younger children may enjoy the hose-waving part, while letting older siblings handle the driving.
Gocco Fire Truck is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store, and in the initial download you get a basic fire engine and three ‘stages’ to use it in, based in the US.
However, you can spend £1.99 as an in-app purchase to unlock nine more US stages plus 12 apiece for Japan and the UK, while £0.69 gets you a Fire Truck Air or Fire Truck Bomber vehicle permanently.
