Explore grammar and phonics with two new Mr Thorne apps

We’ll admit to being new to the work of Mr Thorne on YouTube: he’s the face of a series of educational videos for children, and also a growing series of educational apps.

There are two new ones to tell you about this week. First, Mr Thorne Does Grammar, his 15th app but the first to focus on grammar skills for six year-olds and up.

It uses quizzes to cover off some of the key grammatical skills that kids will be learning at school, from adjectives and capital letters through to compound words, tenses and abbreviations.

It’s all neatly designed and presented, offering a no-nonsense (but also no-boringness) guide to early grammar. In fact, it’s helping me brush up on a few skills that I’d forgotten!

The second app is Mr Thorne Does Phonics: Video Collection, which is actually a repackaging of two of Mr Thorne’s previous apps into a single new one.

Here, as you’ve likely guessed, the focus is on the phonics skills that your children will be developing at school, with lessons delivered through more than 150 videos.

I’ll admit to smiling at the App Store listing, with its “Featuring: a b c d e f ff g h i j k ck l ll m n o p qu r s ss t u v w x y z ch sh th ng ai ee igh oa oo oi or ar er ur ow ear ure air” text. Blends and spellings are also included.

Mr Thorne Does Grammar costs £2.99 for iPhone and iPad, while Mr Thorne Does Phonics: Video Collection costs £3.99 for iPhone and iPad – both from Apple’s App Store.
