Crayola, obviously, is most famous for a specific kind of product: crayons. However, in recent times it’s been exploring making children’s apps too.
They’ve mainly been focused on creativity, and particularly drawing – albeit with fingers rather than crayons. That said, the company has also released its own crayon-shaped accessories to be used with its apps.
Now it’s trying something slightly different: storybook-apps released in partnership with publisher Ruckus Media. Two new ones were released this month: Crayola: Caterpillar’s Colors and Crayola: Picture Day.
Both follow a similar template: a story for early readers with additional interactive features like a word hunt and a make-your-own-story feature. The focus is on helping children with their phonics, alphabet and word recognition, as well as wider reading comprehension.
Caterpillar’s Colors tells the tale of a caterpillar who can’t stop eating (yes that sounds familiar…) with children choosing what fruits and vegetables he munches before turning into a butterfly.
Picture Day is about a group of zoo animals trying to decide what to wear before having their picture taken, with kids playing an active role in choosing an item for each animal to put on, meanwhile.
Crayola: Caterpillar’s Colors costs £2.49 for iPhone and iPad on Apple’s App Store, while Crayola: Picture Day also costs £2.49 for iPhone and iPad.
