When I was a child, my parents had a set of books telling various legends: Roman, Greek and Norse. They’d presumably been bought from a book club or door-to-door salesman in the hope of educating me.
Well, I drank them in, and to this day some of those epic characters are buried in the deepest bits of my brain, ready to pop out when I encounter those myths again. For example, when clapping eyes on a new app called Odysseus for Kids.
It’s the work of developer Quelle Histoire, which is trying to tell the story of Odysseus for 6-10 year-olds across 15 animated scenes (or “tableaux” in their words, which sounds suitably historical!).
There’s also an interactive map to trace the hero’s famous journey, mini-games and portraits to introduce children to the myth, and (hopefully) spark discussion when the device is turned off. It supports 11 languages too, so it’s hoping to find young fans around the world.
We really like the idea of historical tales being retold using interactivity and animation on touchscreens, so we’ll be interested to see how this does. Odysseus for Kids costs £2.49 for iPhone and iPad on Apple’s App Store.
