We have some fond memories of reading the Dinosaur Roar! book to both our sons, including getting into character for reading the different lines. With 5m sales around the world, we’re certainly not alone.
Now there’s an app for that, courtesy of developer Immediate Media. It came out for iPhone and iPad this week pitched as an “animated read & play app” that stays faithful to the book.
Well, not just that. Obviously, there’s the original text and pictures, with children scrolling through rather than turning pages. There’s voice narration – from other children, a tactic used to great effect by another children’s app publisher, Nosy Crow – as well as the option for kids to record and save their own voice reading. Or, indeed, yours.
“Children will love to watch, listen to and touch the dinosaurs as they stomp, shuffle, snuffle, snort, chomp, grunt, blink, squeak and roar,” suggests its App Store listing.
This being an app, there are some interactive bells and whistles too. A colouring section offers up 14 dinosaurs to turn into a prehistoric, multi-coloured feast. It also has a ‘magic colouring’ option for younger kids who aren’t quite so nimble with their fingers – they can still make a dinosaur that looks nice.
Finally, there’s a mini-game called Dinosaur Name, where children get their own name “dinosaured” on screen.
Dinosaur Roar! costs £1.99 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
