Breathe in and out for the Heart and Lungs Lab app

Apple’s App Store is increasingly well-stocked for educational children’s apps about the human body. The latest to be released is Heart and Lungs Lab.

Developed by Spanish company Isygames, the iPad app is part of the company’s series of anatomy apps for kids, following D. Bones and The Amazing Digestive Journey.

This one is all about, well, the heart and lungs – and wider topics around blood circulation and respiration, of course. “Do you know why your body needs oxygen? Do you know why your heart beats faster when you exercise?” asks its App Store listing. “Heart and Lungs Lab answers these questions and unravels other mysteries of your body in a fun, interactive way.”

The app is split into six “labs” to explore different aspects of the subject matter. Kids can look at blood under a virtual microscope; watch it circulating; examine how air moves in and out of the lungs; explore gas exchange in the pulmonary alveoli; read up on what cells do with the air that we breathe; and take a deeper dive into the workings of the heart itself.

There’s also an “atlas” feature to explain the various organs, and a practice test to check that children are taking in what they’ve been learning. Isygames reckons that the app is versatile enough to appeal to children as young as five and as old as 14, thanks to the different parts.

Isygames also says that it will be providing extra materials on its website for parents and teachers, accessible from within the app, to help them with possible discussion points around what the children have been playing with. It’s something we’re seeing lots at the moment in children’s apps, and it’s always welcome.

Heart and Lungs Lab costs £1.99 for iPad from Apple’s App Store.
