Quick Fractions app aims to brush up kids’ maths skills

Learning fractions can be hard, as I remember from when I was a third of the age I am now. Or was that two fifths? A quarter? You get the point.

Developer Shiny Things is hoping to help children practise this particular maths skill with its new app, Quick Fractions. It was released for iPhone and iPad this week.

It’s a collection of simple, accessible mini-games focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages, from comparisons to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

A nice touch: children have to write their answers on-screen, tracing the numbers with their fingers rather than tapping buttons. The idea being to a.) practice their handwriting, but more importantly b.) to work out the answers, rather than simply guess the likeliest solution from a few choices.

The app also has different profiles – so more than one child can use it and work at their own speed through the games – and plenty of feedback on how they’re doing.

Quick Fractions costs £1.49 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
