Children love making a din, and parents love it when someone helps that din be a bit more… listenable. That’s certainly why we gravitate towards inventive music apps for kids.
Fresh Fruits: Rhythm of the City is the latest in a line of favourites including Toca Band, Sago Mini Music Box, Sketch-a-Song and Mibblio – all of which find ways to make music-making even more fun on the touchscreen.
It’s the work of developer Ereading Worksheets, with its three elements clearly signposted in the app’s title: fruit, cities and music. It’s out for iPad this week.
“Fresh Fruits: Rhythm of the City encourages children to explore a cityscape full of tap-to-play musical elements. Join the Fresh Fruits as they walk, roll and boogie their way across a rhythmic metropolis,” explains its App Store listing.
“There are no rules and no time restrictions – kids can journey through the city with six colorful characters for as long as they’d like. The city is full of surprises waiting to be found. Just tap away to discover them all.”
That’s certainly why we like it: an unstressful app of exploration, rather than something tasking children with completing specific tasks in a specific order to create a song. It’s pure fun: but also encourages them to play around with sounds.
Ereading Worksheets reckons it’s suitable for 0-5 year-olds, and while we’d hesitate to let a newborn loose on an iPad (not without 17 muslins and a load of wet wipes, anyway) we think this is perfect for children taking their first taps and swipes on a touchscreen.
Fresh Fruits: Rhythm of the City costs £0.69 for iPad from Apple’s App Store, with no additional in-app purchases.
