Toon Goggles gets a brand new iPhone and iPad app

Have you heard of Toon Goggles? I hadn’t until relatively recently: it’s an online service aimed at children offering cartoons, games and music, which parents pay for with a single monthly subscription.

So, it’s a bit like Netflix meets Spotify meets… well, there isn’t quite an equivalent for games, but you get the picture. And while Toon Goggles has had an iOS app since 2011, it’s just launched a completely new one this month.

It looks very interesting, with eight categories of TV show (boys, girls, action, comedy, preschool, educational, news and ‘TG AE’) and six categories of games (arcade, puzzle, sports, action, strategy and adventures). Meanwhile, its Toon Goggles Radio service has eight million “kid-safe” songs to play.

Canimals was the most famous TV show we spotted within the app: it’s fair to say there’s a lot of shows we didn’t recognise, although part of the fun may be exploring new stuff rather than the same old names from traditional TV. There’s certainly a lot to try out: more than 5,000 cartoons.

The games are mainly colourful arcade titles: fun without rivalling the likes of Angry Birds. And we couldn’t try the Radio feature as it’s not yet available here in the UK – my other job involves writing about the ins and outs (often outs) of digital music licensing, so this isn’t a big surprise to me.

The app lets parents create accounts for their children, who can then save episodes as favourites, as well as storing shows on the device for watching offline – good for long trips and/or holidays.

If you want to upgrade to Toon Goggles Premium, it’ll cost you $4.99 a month (that’s £2.99 here in the UK), although the Radio feature costs $2.99 (£1.99) – obviously, don’t sign up to the latter if you’re in the UK, like us.

Toon Goggles is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store, and there’s already a popular Android app available for the service too.

If you’re on this side of the Atlantic (and specifically, here in Blighty) the obvious alternative is Hopster, which is so far UK-only, with a growing mix of TV shows and educational games.
