There is nothing more 2014, from a parental perspective, than spending 50 minutes watching a YouTube video teaching you how to make a giraffe out of loom bands. Nothing.
We’ve watched the loom band craze spin through our own household this summer, with a two-child cottage industry busily churning out colourful wristbands and necklaces. Giraffes? Not yet, but there’s an app to show us how to do that.
It’s called Loom for Kids with Rainbow Loom Bands, and has been released by Dutch developer Juf Jannie for iPhone and iPad.
It’s a collection of 25 how-to videos put together by a friendly teacher named Tilly: 11 level one videos for beginners, 10 level two videos for children (and parents) taking their next steps, and four level three videos for the experts.
Parents? Well, yes: we’ve been desperately trying to keep pace with our children’s loom-band skills, and even edge a bit ahead so we can answer their questions and prove we’re not entirely useless when it comes to all things rubber bandy. An app like this is a very good cheat-sheet for parents.
It’s also massive in file-size, we should warn you: 1.56GB, since all the videos are preloaded within the app, rather than streamed from a source like YouTube. That means you can watch them without an internet connection, but just be sure you have space on your device before installing.
The videos are also on the Teacher Tilly YouTube channel, for children and parents who’d prefer to watch them on a computer. We’ve embedded the giraffe tutorial above, so you can see the format.
Loom for Kids with Rainbow Loom Bands costs £0.69 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store. And yes, you could just watch the YouTube videos for free, but if someone is going to take the time to figure out (and film) a loom-band giraffe tutorial, we’re more than happy to support them with 69p.
