The John Lewis Christmas advert penguin has his own app

If you’re in the UK like us, by now you may well have seen this year’s Christmas TV ad for retailer John Lewis. It stars a penguin called Monty who… well, we won’t give it away.

What we can reveal, though, is that Monty already has his own app for children: Monty’s Xmas. It was released last week for Android, iPhone and iPad.

It’s part storybook-app, telling Monty’s tale through text, illustrations and the familiar tones of TV presenter Dermot O’Leary.

There’s also a Christmas scene to tap on to see “special surprises”, and a Christmas Card Maker section where children can make their own digital cards using photos, then send them (with parental help) to friends or family.

It’s relatively straightforward compared to some of the best book-apps around, but it’s free, and if your children love the advert, they’ll enjoy the chance to read the story and turn it into Christmas cards.

Monty’s Xmas is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store, and a free download for Android from the Google Play store.

By the way, here’s the ad, if you haven’t seen it yet:
