The Scottish Government made a road-safety app for kids

The headline says it all, really: on the (imaginary) list of ‘people we expected to be publishing children’s apps in 2015′ the Scottish Government was pretty low. Yet here they are, and that’s good news.

Why? The app is called KLANG: The Road Home, which sounds like a Kraftwerk reference but sadly isn’t. It’s an interesting app though, focusing on road safety for kids.

“In a galaxy nearby, right about now, a spaceship has collided with some asteroids and is out of control. Crash landing on Earth in a tiny town in Scotland called Auchterkrankie, the clumsy alien robot pilot ‘Klang’ finds himself stranded without any means to get back to his home, planet Fendaar,” explains its App Store listing.

Children have to help Klang find the parts to fix his ship, while ensuring he safely negotiates the roads (and cars) in his way. Oh, and there are apparently some secret agents hunting him too, so he’ll need to avoid those.

It looks very neatly done, anyway: we think it could find an audience well beyond Scotland – even if it’s probably sensible if that audience is in countries that also drive on the left…

KLANG: The Road Home is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store. And you can read more about the Road Safety Scotland initiative here.
