Kids rock the dancefloor with Crayola DJ app

At first (and, indeed, second, third and fourth) sight there isn’t an obvious link between colouring crayons and DJ types like David Guetta or Tiesto. But that’s where Crayola DJ comes in.

It’s the latest app from the famous colouring brand, with an emphasis on creative musical fun for children – released this month for Apple and Android devices.

As with many DJ and music-making apps for grown-ups, this is about stringing together loops and beats to make tunes, except made accessible for children.

“Play with tracks in different genres, including dance, pop, and hip hop. Then perform for an audience and earn points for mixing and scratching your music,” explains its app store listing.

The app may be child-friendly, but it isn’t childish in its devotion to DJ culture: there are nearly 100 loops created by actual DJs, with crossfaders, a tempo tool and other sound effects that parents may have heard (if they can remember those days!) on real dancefloors.

We think children aged seven and up will have great fun with it. Crayola DJ costs £3.99 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store, and £3.79 for Android devices from the Google Play store.
