Rainbow Loom gets an official Maker Monsters app

Is it unfair to suggest that ‘peak loom band’ was in the summer of 2014? Our sons were hugely excited about twisting colourful rubber-bands together a year ago, but now their bands box is gathering dust in a cupboard. Such is the life of a children’s craze.

Still, the most famous name in the space, Rainbow Loom, could win a few young fans back with its new app, developed by a company called Maker Monsters. It’s called Rainbow Loom Creativity Builder.

The app is about digital creativity, as well as making stuff in the real world. “Your kids will love building and designing their own crabs, cupcakes, spaceships, cars, aliens, sharks and more,” explains its App Store listing.

But yes, it does extend to what your children will be doing when the iPhone or iPad is turned off too. “You will learn how to make all of the Rainbow Loom designs you see in the game with free tutorial videos,” it adds.

Parents get an extra ‘activity guide’ that you can get emailed to you, with suggestions for more things to do. The app looks colourful and accessible, and even though there are umpteen-thousand loom tutorials on YouTube anyway, it’s nice to have a selection of good ones gathered in one place.

Rainbow Loom Creativity Builder with the Maker Monsters costs £2.29 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
