Developer Oceanhouse Media has done a good job of turning the entire Dr Seuss back catalogue into apps for children. Now it’s revisiting some of the most famous books with new apps.
The Cat in the Hat – Read & Learn was the first out recently, and now it’s been joined by a digital reworking of Green Eggs and Ham, which remains the Seussian story we read most with our sons.
Expect the original illustrations and text, with extra learning activities based on spelling, phonics, rhyming and reading comprehension.
As with previous Seuss apps, children can tap on words to hear them spoken aloud, and they’re encouraged to explore the rest of each screen to find other surprises and activities.
There’s also a parents section, which shows you stats like how much time your children have spent reading, and how many pages they’ve read.
A serious focus on early literacy, then, rather than flinging in interactive bells’n’whistles for the sake of it. The risks in that approach are that children will reach for the Home button to play a game with more whizzy thrills. That’s where (we think) the timeless fun of Dr Seuss’ wordplay will tempt them back, though.
Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn costs £3.99 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store.
