“This is my food… but I’m not eating it. GET ME CAKE.” This, sadly, is often the gist of conversations about healthy eating with our children. Tsk.
This Is My Food, though, could help. It’s a new children’s app from developer Urbn; Pockets that aims to introduce children to concepts of food, nutrition and (hopefully) why they can’t eat biscuits all day long.
“Gain clever knowledge and learn interesting facts about food classifications, nutrition and how to cultivate herbs in a fun way,” explains its App Store listing. “In a light-hearted way children become experts in food and nutrition.”
We like the sound of that, and we also like the developer’s claim that the app is based firmly around nutritional standards, but also STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) elements of the school curriculum.
It’s a colourful and accessible guide to different kinds of foods, how they are produced, and how they can be used for tasty meals. The voiceover comes from other children – always a nice touch, as fans of Nosy Crow’s book-apps will attest – and it’s been put together with plenty of craft and polish.
This Is My Food – Nutrition for Kids costs £2.29 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store. There’s even an Apple Watch companion app for notifications about your children’s cress-growing project, if you’ve got one of those on your wrist.
