YouTube Gaming is a new way to watch games videos

Children are watching games videos on YouTube in their tens of millions at least, as you’ll know if you’re familiar (through your kids) with channels like The Diamond Minecart and Stampy.

Now YouTube has launched a standalone app just for games fans, called (logically enough!) YouTube Gaming. It came out for iOS and Android this week.

The app isn’t specifically for children, mind, so be aware that if left to their own devices, they might encounter some videos and channels that have swearing or games that are inappropriate for younger kids.

“YouTube Gaming keeps you connected to the games, players, and culture that matter to you. Featuring videos and live streams with chat — including let’s plays, reviews, speedruns, trailers, and more from your favourite gamers and publishers,” explains its app store listing.

Live streams are a prominent part of the app: people broadcasting their gaming live from their console or computer. Again, be aware that these live streams include chat features, so if your child is younger, you’ll want to be monitoring what they’re up to closely.

The good thing here is that you can favourite specific games and channels – for example, the child-friendly ones – to get a feed of just their videos.

When YouTube eventually launches its YouTube Kids app outside the US, that’ll be the best choice for parents. But until then, YouTube Gaming – with the necessary oversight on your part – may be a good mobile way to keep up with your children’s favourite players.

YouTube Gaming is a free download for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store, and a free download for Android devices from the Google Play store.
