YouTube gamer Stampy and his Minecraft videos are watched by tens of millions of children around the world. Now they’ll be able to read about his adventures too, in upcoming books.
Egmont Publishing has signed a two-book deal with Stampy – aka Joseph Garrett – with the first due for release on 22 October.
It’ll be called Stampy’s Lovely Book, and according to the publisher will feature “activities, comic strips, hilarious jokes and exclusive info about Stampy and his friends”.
It’s the latest example of a YouTube star releasing a book: here in the UK, tomes from Zoella and Alfie Deyes have been big sellers, while Stampy’s fellow (albeit a bit less child-friendly) gamer PewDiePie will soon release his own book too.
“I’m really excited about being able to give my audience a way to have fun with Stampy Cat like they have never been able to before,” said Garrett as the news was announced. We’ll have to wait to see what his second book is about, as that’s not due until 2016.
Getting into publishing caps a busy year for Stampy, since he also starred in a brand new series on YouTube called Wonder Quest, which focused on science and other educational topics – but was still filmed within Minecraft.
We’ve embedded an episode of that below. The series and books alike are good things, we think, because they capitalise on one of the biggest children’s stars on YouTube’s popularity, while encouraging children to think and talk about science – and in the case of the books, to read.
Egmont sounds like the perfect publisher for the job too: it already makes all the official Minecraft books, which have sold in their hundreds of thousands.
