Children’s TV show Bing gets its own baking app

Bing? Isn’t that Microsoft’s search engine? Well, yes, but it’s also an excellent pre-school childen’s TV show that airs on CBeebies here in the UK.

Now there’s an app for that, created for iPhone and iPad by Acamar Films and Aardman Animation. It’s called Bing Baking, and it’s a really fun app based around… biscuits!

“For the first time, your child can be part of Bing’s colourful and playful world by joining him and Flop in their kitchen for a joyful, fun and messy baking experience,” is how its App Store listing puts it.

“In this child-friendly, super-creative app, your Bingster will get the chance to make and decorate a new batch of biscuits each time they play.”

The app takes children through the stages of baking: first rolling out their dough with a rolling pin or careful taps of their fingers on the touchscreen.

Then they cut biscuit shapes out; time them in the oven; and decorate them with sprinkles, chocolate chips, icing and fruit chunks.

Throughout, the Bing and Flop characters explain what has to be done next, which is much better than written instructions given the age of the kids who are likely to be using the app. The controls are simple and the app is easy to find your way around.

Once the biscuits are done, they can be snapped in a photo that is saved to the device’s camera gallery, and then “eaten” before going back to the start to make some more.

It’s good fun whether your children are Bing fans already or not. And it seems like the kind of app that will encourage kids to experiment with baking real biscuits too. A good thing, even if it means you’ll have to deal with the cleanup process…

Bing Baking costs £2.99 for iPhone and iPad from Apple’s App Store. An Android version is due to follow in August.
