We know children of all ages (including parents) are looking forward to the release of Angry Birds Star Wars II on 19 September, but how to fill the time between now and then?

The game’s developer Rovio has an idea: play Angry Birds Space. It’s just launched an update for the game on iPhone, iPad and Android called Cosmic Crystals with 35 new levels to play.

“Those Space Birds find themselves in a strange part of the galaxy with exploding crystal planets and a crazy mutant Space Pig,” explains its app store listing, setting the scene.

The planets are the key: they shatter and explode when a bird piles into them, revealing jewels and pigs in abundant numbers. And there’s also the promise of the Space Pig boss to battle, and a special “Space Eagle” level.

Okay, no Skywalker, Vader or laser guns: for that, you and your kids will have to wait a week. In the meantime, Angry Birds Space costs £0.69 for iPhone, £1.99 for iPad and is a free download for Android.
