Angry Birds Star Wars II was supposed to be released tomorrow, 19 September. There’s been a change of plan for its developer Rovio though: the game is out now.

It’s available for iPhone and iPad, Android and Windows Phone, and is the sequel to last year’s hugely-popular Angry Birds Star Wars, which has been downloaded by more than 100m people.

The new game continues in the same vein: it’s Angry Birds, but with the birds and pigs all representing characters from the Star Wars films, including the original trilogy, and the three modern films. The likes of Luke Skywalker, Yoda and Darth Vader, then, but also Darth Maul, Anakin and even Jar Jar Binks.

More than 30 characters can be played, and for the first time in Angry Birds history, you can sling pigs at birds as well as the other way around.

Also new: tie-in toys called Telepods, which will be sold in shops for between £5.99 and £39.99, and are basically mini-figures to collect and play with, but which can also be stood on transparent bases, placed on top of your device’s camera, and scanned in for use in the game.

Angry Birds Star Wars II does use in-app purchases: you can buy virtual coins then exchange them for different characters – either for a limited number of uses, or as permanent power-ups. The coins are sold for between £1.49 and £69.99, so make sure you have your in-app purchase settings locked down before letting your children loose on the game.

Angry Birds Star Wars II costs £0.69 for iPhone and iPad on Apple’s App Store, £0.79 for Android on the Google Play store, and £0.79 for Windows Phone on Microsoft’s store.

We’ll have a full review tomorrow, but if you want a bit more depth in the meantime, I’ve also reviewed it in my other job for The Guardian, so there are more details there.
