Book and book-apps publisher Nosy Crow and illustrator Axel Scheffler (of Gruffalo fame) have collaborated on apps before: the fun Pip and Posy: Fun and Games and Animal SnApp: Farm.
Now there’s a new one: Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap Farm. Released today for iPhone and iPad, it’s actually a follow-up to Animal SnApp: Farm, featuring some of the same animals.
The app is also inspired by the flip-flap books that let you match sections of different pictures: in this case, the top and bottom halves of various animals.
“What do you get when you cross a goat with a turkey? Why, a gurkey, of course! What about a pig with a sheep? Well, that would be a peep, naturally!” as the App Store listing puts it.
The app has 121 possible combinations, with each hybrid animal getting its own name, and silly noises thrown in for good measure, as well as a poem about how it looks and what it does.
There is also a choice of two reading modes – Read by Myself or Read and Play – to suit children of different ages and reading abilities. As with previous Nosy Crow apps, the voice narration is provided by children rather than grown-ups.
Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap Farm costs £0.69 / $0.99 for iPhone and iPad on Apple’s App Store. And there’s a print book version coming out this month too, which sounds just as fun. Here’s a video demo of the app:
