Lots of children love Minecraft. There are lots of Minecraft YouTube videos. Quite a lot of those videos aren’t child-friendly. Fellow parents: we have a problem.
KicVidz is an app hoping to solve it. Developed by Shane Keller for his seven year-old “Minecraft fanatic” child, it’s a curated selection of Minecraft YouTube videos that, in his words, “do not feature any of the more common and popular curse words such as the ‘s’ word, the ‘f’ word, and the word used for ‘behind’.”
It’s a sensible response to the undesirability of sending a seven year-old off into the Wild West of YouTube Minecraft vids, where you don’t have to be a prude to be concerned about the kind of language your kids may be hearing.
The app isn’t just about avoiding swearing though. Keller has sorted the videos he finds into useful categories, including Parkour, Survival Games, Music Videos and Animations, to aid your children’s browsing. There’s also a What’s New category to see the latest additions, and the ability to save any individual clip to a Favourites group.
This is all good. It may sound strange if you’re not completely up to speed with Minecraft – the game where children can create whatever they like from blocks – but watching YouTube videos is a big part of the culture. It’s how many children get ideas for new things to build, or tips on elements of Minecraft creation that they’re stuck with.
Anyway, KicVidz – MC costs £0.69 for iPhone on Apple’s App Store – it’ll also work on iPads, albeit blown up to twice the size. And if your kids are playing Minecraft on an Android device, the app has been available on those since last year.
