Minecraft kids can now play as Dennis the Menace

Do your children play Minecraft on a PC? Do they like The Beano, or (more likely) the TV series Dennis and Gnasher? If so, we’ve got some exciting news for you and them.

DC Thomson, which is in charge of The Beano and its characters, is launching a new “mod” for Minecraft based on Dennis and Gnasher. It means kids can play as Dennis, while summoning Gnasher and terrorising softy Walter with his catapult, rotten tomatoes and stink bombs.

New to mods? They’re ways to customise Minecraft any way you like, from famous characters and settings through to weird and wonderful shapes and textures. If your child is mad about Minecraft, chances are they can already teach you how mods work!

“The Beano has always been about great storytelling, imagination and creativity. Minecraft is a perfect match for us, providing an amazing sandbox for kids to take our characters, tell their own stories, prank their friends and build out Beanotown,” said Mark Cotton of DC Thomson, as the Dennis and Gnasher mod was announced.

Here’s a video showing how it works, from YouTube Minecrafter ChooChoosGaming:

Fun, eh? And interesting for those of us who are now parents, but who grew up with The Beano, to see how it’s adapting for a more digital generation. The Minecraft mod follows August’s release of Dennis & Gnasher’s Prank Sticker app for iPhone and iPad, by the way.

We’ll update this post as soon as we know how / where to get your hands on the Minecraft mod, but a quick note: it’s just for the PC version of Minecraft, not the “Pocket” edition for iOS and Android, or (as far as we can make out) for console versions of the game. At least, not yet…
